According to the American Society of Plastic Surgeons, the effects of gravity may explain the effects of testosterone in male pattern baldness. The findings were included in a paper that was published in the “Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery-Global Open.”

According to the findings, the downward pull of gravity on the scalp skin is a key contributor to the events leading to male pattern baldness.

This theory helps explain why dihydrotestosterone (DHT) seems to make hair thinner on a man’s head but makes the hair thicker in other parts of the body. Researchers now believe the weight of the scalp on the hair follicles causes the hair to thin. In addition, experts say that as men age the skin and underlying fat become thinner, which puts more pressure on hair follicles.
