Joe McLean joined ABC 17 News in January 2012, working in a variety of positions including studio assistant, production assistant, photographer, multimedia journalist, assignment editor and Jefferson City bureau chief. In 2017, Joe joined the morning news team as breaking news anchor, tracking the latest details of the most important stories developing overnight. He also anchors ABC 17 News at 9 a.m. along with Lindsey Berning.
Over the last few years, Joe has been involved in covering some of Missouri's most impactful stories including the shooting death of Michael Brown and the protests that followed, the unrest and turmoil at the University of Missouri and many pieces of landmark state legislation.
In 2016, Joe undertook the design and construction of our new-and-improved website, abc17news.com. Joe has been recognized multiple times by the Kansas City Press Club for both general reporting and outstanding special coverage. He also garnered the top prize in breaking news coverage from the Missouri Broadcasters Association in 2017.
An Independence native, Joe is a May 2015 graduate of the University of Missouri where he received a Bachelor's degree in convergence journalism emphasizing in emerging media. He's no stranger to the art/science of communication having grown up with 8 siblings.
Joe enjoys the outdoors, fine-dining, jazz music, cracking wise and the programming on Netflix.
