JEFFERSON CITY, Mo. (AP) — Republican state Sen. Eric Schmitt says he is running for Missouri treasurer in 2016.
Schmitt announced his candidacy Wednesday with a news release while touting his sponsorship of tax-cutting measures in the Legislature. The lawmaker from St. Louis County is the first to officially enter the treasurer's race.
State Treasurer Clint Zweifel (ZWY-ful), a Democrat, is prohibited by term limits from seeking re-election.
Schmitt is a lawyer whom some had considered a likely candidate for attorney general. But fellow Republican Sen. Kurt Schaefer, of Columbia, already has entered that race, and House Speaker Tim Jones, of Eureka, also has considered it.
Schmitt had $866,000 in his campaign account as of the start of April.
