East Coast staple Dunkin' Donuts opened its first shop in Southern California on Tuesday, and some fans slept on the sidewalk outside to be one of the first in line.

Los Angeles Register reported that more than 300 Dunkin' Donuts fans showed their appreciation for the chain by waiting – some more than 24 hours – for the 5 a.m. opening in Santa Monica.

The first person in line won free coffee for a year by camping out since 9:30 p.m. Sunday.

The store was the first of a major expansion into the Los Angeles area; About 100 shops are scheduled to open by the end of the year.

Before Tuesday, there were only three Dunkin’ spots in California.
