A priest who mysteriously seemed to come from nowhere to pray at a northeast Missouri accident scene actually came from the Roman Catholic Diocese of Jefferson City.
The diocese issued a statement Monday identifying the priest as Rev. Patrick Dowling, who's based in Columbia.
First responders have wondered about him since he appeared Aug. 4 at the scene of a two-vehicle crash near the town of Center on Route 19.
Witnesses said the priest suddenly showed up with anointing oil as rescuers were cutting 19-year-old Katie Lentz, of Quincy, Ill., out of her mangled car. The priest seemed to disappear after praying.
The diocese says Fr. Dowling came across the scene while driving between morning Mass assignments that morning. He prayed for Katie and offered absolution before driving away.
