ASHLAND, Mo. -

Charges have been filed against an Ashland woman accused of biting an officer during a struggle.

Ashland officers responded to a report of a disturbance with a weapon around 5:22 p.m. Sunday on Morgan Drive. Officers say Dallas Denee' Smith, 19, had made suicidal comments and allegedly fired a shotgun into the ground.

As an officer attempted to handcuff Smith for safety, but she resisted and began to struggle with the officer. During the fight, Ashland Police Chief Lyn Woolford said she bit the officer on the arm.

Smith was taken to the University of Missouri Psychiatric Center for evaluation. The officer was taken to the University Hospital emergency room for treatment.

On Wednesday, Dmith was charged with assault on a law enforcement officer. Her bond has been set at $15,000.

Woolford said the injured officer is back on-duty, but has bite marks near his left elbow.
