KINGSTON, Mo. - Law enforcement throughout Missouri are actively searching for a man who escaped from a detention center overnight.
The Missouri State Highway Patrol says 23-year-old Brian James Adkison escaped from the Caldwell County Detention Center around midnight Saturday.
Authorities say he escaped barefoot and was only wearing white boxer shorts.
"He was able to escape from his cell through the ceiling, and at that point, he was able to work his way to an office area and make his escape out of jail," Sgt. Sheldon Lyon with the Missouri State Highway Patrol told ABC 17 News.
Adkison is described as a white male with brown hair and eyes, 6 feet tall and weighing 180 pounds.
Columbia police say Adkison may have stolen a white 2000 Ford F-350 pickup truck with from Kingston, Mo. The truck has Missouri license plate 44A0WT. Police say the truck has a crease in the driver's door, a DPMS sticker and a diamond plate fuel tank in the bed.
Adkison was being held on numerous charges, including rape and kidnapping. He was the center of a manhunt recently in the Lake of the Ozarks area, where he eluded officers for several days before being captured in Morgan County.
Columbia police say Adkison is known to frequent the Mid-Missouri area and he should be considered dangerous. Sgt. Joe Bernhard said Adkison has led police on high-speed pursuits, committed burglaries and stolen vehicles.
In May, Adkison was arrested for allegedly breaking into a north Columbia home and raping a woman.
Then in June, authorities say he kidnapped his ex-girlfriend in Caldwell County before dropping her off at University Hospital in Columbia. Adkison eluded authorities for nearly a week near the Lake of the Ozarks, causing police to set up road blocks and search for him by land, air and water.
Anyone with information is urged to contact the Caldwell County Sheriff's Department at 816-586-2681 or the Missouri State Highway Patrol at 816-387-2345. If you see Adkison, call 911 immediately.
