JEFFERSON CITY, Mo. - UPDATE: 4:00 a.m.: Four people have been taken into custody after police say they led law enforcement on a multi-county car chase after a theft from the Jefferson City Dillard's store.
According to Jefferson City police, the theft was reported around 3:20 p.m. Tuesday. Witnesses gave descriptions of the suspect vehicle which was spotted by officers on U.S. Highway 50 near Dix Road.
A JCPD officer attempted to stop the car but police say the driver failed to yield and the pursuit began.
Police say they car went eastbound, crossing the Missouri River Bridge. Police followed the car north on Highway 54 as it continued to fail to stop for police.
Jefferson City police called other agencies along the Highway 54 corridor for help. Holts Summit, Callaway County and the Missouri State Highway Patrol assisted.
Once the car reached Fulton, officers used spike strips on the car's tires.
Four people from East St. Louis, Illinois were placed into custody and taken to Jefferson City.
Merchandise taken in the Dillard's theft has been valued at over $3,000. At this time, the suspects are also being investigated for several other thefts with merchandise totaling in excess of an additional $10,000.
Charges being considered include felony stealing, resisting arrest by fleeing and a multitude of traffic related offenses.

The Callaway County Sheriff's Department said the pursuit came into Callaway County on U.S. Highway 54.
Callaway County Sheriff's Department, Fulton Police Department and Missouri State Highway Patrol assisted Jefferson City police in the chase.
Fulton police successfully deployed tire deflation devices on U.S. Highway 54 near State Road H.
Deputies said the suspect vehicle came to a stop near CR 306 in Fulton.
Both lanes of northbound U.S. Highway 54 are back open, deputies said.
