The Jefferson City Human Resources Department is sorting through 67 applications for the open city administrator position.
The city began accepting applications in September after firing Nathan Nicklaus.
Last Friday was the final day for people to apply for the job.
Human resources officials expect to eliminate about half of the applications this week by taking out anyone who does not meet the minimum qualifications.
Next week, the mayor's appointed search committee will choose the candidates it wants to interview. The interviews will take place in December and January.
Interim city administrator Drew Hilpert says the committee is looking for the most qualified and experienced candidate.
"It takes a certain amount of skill and qualifications and leadership to do that job," he said. "Outside of the elected officials, it's the most important job in the city."
The city administrator directs all city departments, plans the budget and communicates with the media regarding the capital city.
Jefferson City leaders plan to fill the position by Spring 2014.
