Mega-hog farm concerns Callaway County residents

Proposed hog farm concerns some Callaway Co. residents

CALLAWAY CO., Mo. - Tuesday night more than 100 Callaway County residents showed up at a public meeting  at the Hatton-McCredie Elementary School to voice concerns over a proposed hog operation that would house about 10,000 pigs.

Residents voiced concerns over pollution and bad smells. They're worried about run-off to water supplies. They heard from a neighbor of a mega-hog farm in northern-Missouri. The man told the crowd of his 18 year litigation against the mega-farm. He also told them how the farm was then sold to the Chinese.

Supporters told the crowd that waste and smell would be properly taken care of and rumors and misinformation were the root of their fears. They promised the crowd there would be no problems from the farm.

The confinement facility would employee 25 full-time workers and those salaries would range from $11 to $35 an hour.

County Commissioners told ABC 17 News there is currently no zoning in the county to prevent the facility from setting up shop.
