CAMDEN COUNTY, Mo. - A woman has been charged with financial exploitation of an elderly person after Osage Beach police responded to a report of a possible theft at the Lakeside Meadows Retirement Center.
According to the probable cause statement, Jody Floriez was identified as having the power of attorney for a 101-year-old woman who lived at the retirement center.
Police said they learned the elderly woman never gave Floriez permission to use her money.
Officers said they spoke with a person who previously held the power of attorney, who said she found an ad for Floriez. The previous power of attorney said she was looking to find a person who could assist the elderly woman with chores and errands a few times a week.
The former power of attorney told police that Floriez inserted herself into all matters concerning the elderly woman and was eventually awarded the power of attorney.
According to the probable cause statement, multiple people felt that they were cut off from the elderly woman after Floriez became involved in her affairs.
Police said one account from the elderly woman had over 38 checks written out to Floriez.
Officers said they found a life insurance bank account given to the elderly woman after her daughter died. According to the transactions, Floriez had written six checks on the account, all for cash made out to herself.
According to the probable cause statement, the exact amount exploited by Floriez is not known due to the funds being transferred into cash. However, police made a conservative estimate that $113,114.63 was taken by Floriez.
