JEFFERSON CITY, Mo. -

Jefferson City police are investigating what they call an apparent suicide near the downtown area.

Officers were dispatched to a home on East McCarty Street around 10 p.m. Tuesday.

Police cordoned off the area as crime scene investigators worked. Police say the victim is a 12-year-old.

Detectives with the police department are continuing to investigate. Police told ABC 17 News that detectives are still interviewing family members and friends.

Sources told ABC 17 News police did take the girl's computer and smart phone from the home.

The Jefferson City school district brought in three additional counselors to Lewis and Clark Middle School on Wednesday. The girl was in 7th grade there.
