Public officials increasing safety after shootings

Mid-Missouri public officials taking security seriously

COLUMBIA, Mo. - After the shootings in Texas this past weekend and Colorado last month, public officials in Missouri are taking security more seriously.

Both incidents concerned Boone County prosecutor Dan Knight.

"It's something that kind of struck close to home and my heart goes out to those families. This person probably killed him and his wife because of the job he held," Knight said.

Knight held a meeting with the other employees who work at the Columbia courthouse to discuss personal safety.

The number one tip discussed -- being aware.

Cole County Sheriff Greg White shared the same message.

"People should always be aware of the circumstances that they are in, what is going on around them and to pay attention. They need to listen and not be ambivalent about things that are inappropriate, and if you see something that is an issue, notify law enforcement," White said.
