The Better Business Bureau is warning mid-Missourians of a scholarship scam.

Targeted victims will receive a mailing resembling a USPS money order from a fake university that contains a letter instructing the recipient to cash the money orders.

The letter then says to keep the cash, but wire a certain amount of money back to the scammers to cover admissions fees.

The money orders eventually bounce, leaving the recipient responsible for paying back the money they received from cashing them in.

Scammers use high quality printers and scanners to make their checks and money orders look authentic.

Here are some tips to avoid becoming a victim of this scam:

Know who you are dealing with and that they are trustworthy, never wire money, and report to the BBB, Federal Trade Commission, and Missouri Attorney General.
