Jan 25, 2010 - Group of Doctors and Nurses en route to Haiti
The group of Columbia doctors and nurses left St. Louis around 6am Monday headed for Haiti.
They are expected to stay 3 to 5 days to help out at a hospital near Port-Au Prince. Many of the doctors are Orthapedic specialists at the request of medical crews already on the ground in Haiti. Posted by Stephanie Schaefer

A local group made up of various healthcare workers leaves
for Haiti
Monday, but not before collecting a couple thousand pounds worth of medical
supplies.

Nine people are headed to help out at a Hospital in Milot,
which is about 75 miles north of Port-Au-Prince.
The crew is made up of surgeons, pediatricians, nurses and
emergency workers and will leave from St.
Louis.

Originally the group was going to be made of mostly
emergency workers, but as the hospital in Haiti assessed the situation more
they realized more people with orthopedic backgrounds were needed to help with
long term care.
When the team asked what they could bring, they were told
whatever they could.
That resulted in more than 2,400 lbs. of medical supplies,
donated by medical groups all over Mid-Missouri.

But getting all the supplies down there is more difficult than the
team thought.
They have to weigh everything and take an inventory of all the
items. They also have to make sure all the thousands of dollars worth of medicine
they are bringing down there is accounted for.
The members of the group also had to prepare
themselves, making sure they have a
passport, shots and up-to-date records.
But many agree the hassle of getting ready to leave
will be nothing compared to what they will see while they are down there.
They are volunteering at a hospital called CRUDEM. The
last update they got was that the hospital that normally holds around 75 patients
was caring for 250 people.
Many of the people they will be dealing with are people who
weren’t even able to get initial treatment after the earthquake.
The group will be down there anywhere from three to five
days.
Another team is already being assembled from Columbia to go down there
in the following weeks.
While the group doesn’t need anymore supplies for this
specific trip, they will be assessing the situation and asking for more when
they return.
