Investigators are working to determine what caused a small fire early Thursday in Holts Summit.

Firefighters were called around 2 a.m. to Doolittle Trailer Manufacturing, 2455 Doolittle Drive, where a caller to 911 reported an explosion and a fire at an outbuilding at the plant.

When crews arrived, they found some 55-gallon drums of paint on fire. The flames were extinguished in about 20 minutes.

Holts Summit Fire Chief Scott Brooks said Thursday an initial investigation concluded the fire might have been a result of spontaneous combustion. Rags containing chemicals can sometimes burn spontaneously, he said.

However, investigators are now working to examine whether a lightning strike might have sparked the blaze.

Thunderstorms were in the area last night.
