State officials are warning Missourians about potential scams by people pretending to be federal agents selling health care insurance.

The Missouri Department of Insurance said Monday at least one Missouri resident has been approached by a salesman who said he was a federal agent selling health care insurance under recently passed federal health care legislation.

Anyone claiming to work for the government offering an insurance product is a fraud, the department said in a news release.

"Scams based on current events are nothing new," said John Huff, director of the Department of Insurance. "We've seen it with everything from H1N1 to federal stimulus money to health care reform. Consumers should not be fooled and should stop, call and confirm."

Consumers can call the Insurance Consumer Hotline at 800-726-7390 or contact the department online at insurance.mo.gov.
