Police in Osage Beach are warning consumers to be wary of a person seeking financial information and claiming to be a representative of the Special Olympics.

According to police, a man recently called a Lake-area business soliciting funds for his son - whom he claimed was a Special Olympics athlete. The man apparently provided an 800 number, but the business owner questioned the number and reported the call to police.

A spokeswoman for the Osage Beach Police Department said Special Olympics officials in Jefferson City have called the solicitation a scam.
