The explosion that destroyed a laboratory on the University of Missouri-Columbia campus in late June was accidental, officials said Friday.
The explosion at Schweitzer Hall June 28 occurred during the setup of a "microbiological anaerobic growth chamber," MU said in a news release. Prior to the explosion, hydrogen gas was prematurely introduced into the chamber and reached an explosive level.
A spokesman for MU said several recommendations have been put in place in an effort to avoid such explosions in the future.
