Police Believe Shooting is Connected to Others

Columbia police are looking into a shooting they believe is connected to a string of shootings, thought to be between two families.

Police say the latest shooting happened at about 5:45 Friday morning on Hickman Avenue. They believe this is the sixth in a string of shootings that began late last month and has resulted in two arrests so far.

Police tell ABC 17 News almost everything about the way the shooting happened is leading them to believe it is connected. They say Columbia doesn't get many drive-by shooting and for it to happen again, it's too much of a coincidence for it not to be related. And if they're right, police hope to be getting information about it sometime soon.

Residents who live nearby where the latest shooting happened, tell me they're now very concerned to go outside.

"I heard a gunshot when I was sweeping my grass and stuff up at about a quarter to six and I seen some people coming over here," resident near shooting Maryann Bradford tells us.

Police believe four to six shots were fired at this house, and several of them actually struck the house.

Talking with the family living there, they tell us this is the third time within a year they've been shot at. They say they were shot at one time when they lived on Quail Drive, and another just three weeks ago on Sanford and Ash, which is part of the string we've been reporting.

Police believe these are happening because two families are fighting over something. They say they don't have many leads, but are hoping they get the information like they did for previous shootings.

"We don't have anybody identified yet and that brings up a good point in that crime stoppers did a really good job last time and we're hoping that will be the case again because we have very little to go on," Columbia police officer Jill Wieneke explains.

Police tell us if the same groups involved in this shooting are the same ones from before, they're expecting information to be leaked.

"If our speculations are correct and it is an ongoing problem, we think they're connected, then it's going to come to life fairly quickly," Wieneke says.

Police say the family is being cooperative with investigators, but they aren't giving out any names. They ask if you know anything about the shootings call Crime Stoppers at 875-TIPS (8477).
