A late night fire Saturday leaves one Columbia home destroyed, and a family homeless.

The fire happened at on Nottingham Court in Northeast Columbia.  Crews could see smoke and flames from Highway 63 before they arrived and say the home was almost destroyed by the time they got there.

Crews arrived at the scene a little after 10PM, where they say 50 percent of the house was already in flames. It took firefighters about 40 minutes to control the blaze.  Fire officials call it a total loss because of the amount of fire, smoke and water damage.  Columbia Fire tried to contact the family but they were unsuccessful.  The family was away for the weekend, and came home Sunday to see there house had been burnt down.

The Red Cross is helping the family.  Investigators still don't know the cause of the fire, but believe the estimated amount of damage was at $200,000.
