It's still unclear if laws were broken after five puppies were left outside in a Rubbermaid container, killing four of them.
Sometime between 6PM Tuesday and 7AM Wednesday, the Border collie puppies were left outside the Central Missouri Humane Society on Big Bear Boulevard.
The container had a few nails holes poked in the top, and there was no food or water inside.
Staff we talked with tell us it's always a possibility that the person who dropped off these animals may have thought they were doing the right thing. But with signs posted indicating when the drop off hours are and even an emergency number available for them to call, many just don't understand.
Looking through the Columbia ordinances, we found abandonment of any domestic animal to die, is considered animal abuse.
But police tell us it would be hard to prove because you don't know the intentions of the person who dropped off the puppies.
And we may never know. The Humane Society doesn't have any leads as to who it may be, and while they have some cameras they weren't pointed near the area where the dogs were dropped off.
Currently the puppy that survived is with a foster family, and is doing fine.
But the dog is not ready to be adopted, so they would like calls to be limited on this case.
CMHS will take in any animals; it just has to be between Monday and Saturday, 8AM to 5PM.
