Police Warn of Identity Theft Scam

A Columbia woman said she received a call from a man who needed to "verify her Social Security number."

Columbia police are warning about a potential identity theft scam after a woman reported receiving a call from a man who said he needed to "verify her Social Security number."

 

Officers said the woman received a call Thursday from the man, who said he was with the East Lansing (Mich.) Police Department. The man provided her with the first three digits of her Social Security number and said he needed to verify the rest.

 

According to police, the man - who identified himself as John Walker, Larry Walker or Edward Walker - called from (516) 515-3371.
