Multiple road projects planned for Cole, Callaway counties

More than $3M for maintenance, to improve safety

JEFFERSON CITY, Mo. - The Missouri Department of Transportation has several major road construction projects on already on the books for 2017.

A main focus of the Central District office is safety improvements for Hwy 54 between Kingdom City and Jefferson City.

"The addition of High Friction Surface Treatment at the Mel Ray curve is being done as part of an existing resurfacing project currently under contract on Highway 54," said Natalie Roark, the district's design engineer. "That should be completed by July 1."

The Mel Ray curve was where a head-on crash occurred in July, resulting in the death of Karlie Jones, 15, of Holts Summit, and Caleb McClain, 16, of Jefferson City.

Guard cables are also scheduled to be installed for the entire stretch of Hwy 54, a $3.6 million investment.

"Safety is always a number on priority for us," said Roark. "Any project we look at, we're going to look for needed safety improvements."

Here are some of the projects planned for Cole and Callaway Counties.
