The University of North Carolina is investigating a training camp incident between football players that escalated from an alleged hazing into a group assault of a teammate, according to a Yahoo Sports report.

"We are aware of an incident involving members of the UNC football team that took place earlier this month. We take this allegation seriously and the University is conducting a thorough review," Kevin Best, North Carolina's assistant athletic director for communications, said in a statement to Yahoo Sports.

According to the report, during the first week of August, freshman wide receiver Jackson Boyer was involved in a physical altercation with multiple teammates in his hotel that left the redshirt walk-on concussed.

The alleged assailants have yet to be identified in the ongoing investigation.

The Tar Heels, who were 7-6 last season, open the 2014 season Saturday at home against Liberty.

This is the latest in a series of scandals that have plagued UNC in recent years, including a recently reopened investigation into academic misconduct.
