MU among schools canceled Wednesday

Extreme cold expected

Schools across mid-Missouri have canceled Wednesday classes because of extreme cold expected overnight, including districts in Columbia and Jefferson City.

The University of Missouri Columbia campus announced classes would be canceled Wednesday morning due to mechanical issues with shuttle services.

Columbia Public Schools was the first district to announce its decision at about 11:30 a.m. Tuesday.

Several schools followed, including districts such as Jefferson City, Boonville, Centralia, Hallsville, Moberly, Southern Boone, Mexico and North Callaway.

Wind chills Wednesday morning are expected to drop as low as minus-30 degrees, with temperatures bottoming out below zero. The National Weather Service has the entire mid-Missouri area under either a wind chill advisory or a wind chill warning. The ABC 17 Stormtrack Weather team has called a Weather Alert Day for Wednesday and Thursday.
