Strong winds cause damage, outages throughout Mid-Missouri

Strong winds caused problems in parts of Mid-Missouri on Thursday.

A tree fell down on power lines on Highway J in New Bloomfield, causing a power outage.

According to the outage map, 238 Ameren customers lost power. The outage was first reported around 5 p.m. Ameren estimated power would be restored around 9:15 p.m.

Crews shutdown the highway to make repairs.

Troopers said winds blew over a semi on northbound Highway 63 north of Highway B near Clark around 3:30 p.m.

No one was injured, according to Sgt. Eric Brown.

High winds also affected the construction project at the State Capitol. The winds forced some of the covering around the building to rip, according to the Office of Administration.

A construction crew is expected to start evaluating the damage and begin repairing and replacing the covering tomorrow and next week, officials said. The covering has not impacted the scaffolding or overall progress of the project, officials said. The work is still expected to be done by the end of next year.

Winds also brought down a tree on the University of Missouri campus Thursday morning.

A pine tree fell on a side walk on the north side of Waters Hall.  Liz McCune with MU News Bureau said it did not cause any damage to the building.

The Columbia Fire Department also responded to reports of a building collapse. Firefighters arrived on scene to discover a home in the 500 block of Crestland Avenue received damage from a tree.

Fire officials said there were no reported injuries and crews were on scene for less than fifteen minutes.

The city of Columbia also confirmed Water & Light customers experienced some outages Thursday due to high wind speeds. At one point Thursday afternoon 175 customers were without power. As of 4:15 p.m., 26 customers remained without power.
