Macon County R-1 middle school students will move to all online classes after the district reported multiple cases of COVID-19 via Twitter on Saturday.

According to a tweet from the Macon Tigers' twitter account, after contact tracing is completed they estimate around one third of Macon middle school students will be required to quarantine.

The outbreak has affected all three middle school grade levels but won't force other grades to start all online.

A fourth grade elementary school student also tested positive for COVID-19. Parents of students who were identified as close contacts that need to be quarantined should look for an email from the Macon County Health Department.

Officials hope students will be able to return to in-person instruction on Tuesday, Sept. 22.

According to the release featured in the tweet, district superintendent Scott Jarvis mentions some parents will receive emails from the school at the direction of the health department.

We reached out to both the Macon R-1 School District and the Macon County Health Department but did not immediately hear back.

Athletic events and other middle school gatherings are also on hold for the time being.

Students who need to pick up learning devices or other items should contact the Macon Middle School office.
